The 3 things I've learnt from Soul

SATURDAY, JANUARY 16, 2021

Have you watched the recent movie called Soul? Have you ever wished you have a mentor to help you find your spark in life as well? Timely how these life lessons came through such a cute animation. I believe everyone of us has that ‘calling’, ‘passion’ in us and many times it requires another individual to call that out.

passion led us here

In this short article, I will share my 3 learnings from this movie related to spark, dreams, mentoring and technology.

1. Your spark is not your purpose.

Spark is defined as the part of you before you are ready to start living. Some call it the thing you loving doing. Whatever you grew up loving is not your purpose for living. Whatever you love doing is as it is - whatever you love doing. They are distinctively different points and we cannot mix them up. I grew up loving basketball and that became my hobby for much of my life since young. But that isn’t the purpose i which i feel called for. I look at marginalised society and I feel that pull. That tugging of the heart string calling me to do something about what i am seeing. That does not mean i started anything, just sensed the direction in which i could explore further. Take your time to discover yourself!

2. Chase your dreams, but enjoy the process

Here’s a song that hit me hard. Life is not all about chasing the big dream. It is about the daily living, the simple joys of life. I came to realise that such experiences would require you to engage with your senses.

Take a moment to close your eyes. Take a deep breath.
What do you feel? What do you feel in your chest? Let those sink in.
That is how living feels like.

Wish to share with you a song that helped to put this point into perspective

The four verses of this song “Dream Small” by Josh Wilson I want to point out.

It’s a mama singing songs about the Lord
It’s a daddy spending family time the world says he cannot afford
These simple moments change the world

It’s a pastor at a tiny little church
40 years of loving on the broken and the hurt
These simple moments change the world

It’s visiting the widow down the street
Or dancing on a Friday with your friend with special needs
These simple moments change the world

Of course there’s nothing wrong with bigger dreams
Just don’t miss the minutes on your way to bigger things
Cause these simple moments change the world

It is indeed these moments that changes the world; one person at a time. Do not go chasing your dream and forget about the essence of simple living.

3. We need a coach to guide us once in awhile

Even in the movie, the mentorship is the centre piece for an unborn soul to figure out what is their spark to be ready to live! Often times we need a mentor or i would often call coach to help me to navigate the complexity within. It is a curious thing how actually do mentoring work - the science behind it.

Perhaps it is a lot easier to connect the dots when you look upon the lives of others from a third party perspective. Thereupon, you can build your worldview based on these observations. From there, you can then perceive your own life and its experiences from a different lens.

TLDR;

Everyone has a spark in them, a calling, a passion. Many times it requires another soul of greater experiences to show you their life story in which you can better develop your worldview and perceive yours with greater clarity. In technology, some find joy in creating solutions to solve problems while others enjoys the Research & Development process; one is not better than another.

But one thing for sure, whatever you do, do it with your heart and soul. It translates in the work you produce and that could possibly help another find their spark too!
